Vote YES on Referendum #1 - What happens if it goes down?

Our budget for 2010 is already nearly 20% below the budget for 2009. It includes cutting 1/3 of the city's staff and three Police positions. This budget includes projected revenue from the utility tax. If the temporary tax is not approved by the voters there will be significant additional cuts and our city could be bankrupt within three years. Further cuts in the budget could mean closing parks and losing our 24 hour police protection. What could bankruptcy mean?? Click here for all the reasons...

Utility Tax Rebates Available to Low Income Residents

The Utility Tax ordinance includes a refund procedure for eligible low income households.  They can apply for a refund by June 30th of each year and if they meet the criteria they can receive an annual refund of $100.  The utility tax is a tax on the utility providers (they pass the cost on to consumers).  Since the city doesn't receive direct payment from the property owners it does not have a way to exempt low income houselholds automatically The low income refund procedure is what most other jurisdictions provide.
